Slovenia bans arms trade with Israel - becomes first European country to take

Slovenia has become the first EU country to ban arms trade with Israel in response to its actions in Gaza. The decision comes after the European Union failed to adopt joint sanctions against Tel Aviv.

Slovenia will be the "first European country" to ban arms trade with Israel in response to Tel Aviv's actions in Gaza, Prime Minister Robert Golob told the local Press Agency.

“The government today adopted a decision prohibiting the export and transit of weapons and military equipment from or through the territory of the Republic of Slovenia to Israel, as well as the import of such goods from Israel,” a statement published on the official website of the Slovenian government said. The document notes that the decision comes as a result of the prime minister’s promise to “act independently” against Israel if the European Union “does not take concrete measures by mid-July.”

EU member states have repeatedly failed to muster sufficient support to respond to Israel's ongoing actions in Gaza. Despite a review of the EU-Israel association agreement, which found that Israel's actions in Gaza violate human rights, the 27 EU countries failed to agree on any of the 10 proposed sanctions.

At the bloc level, an arms embargo on Israel has never been proposed. UN and EU rules state that human rights violations and war crimes should lead to an arms embargo. After the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands have banned or restricted arms exports, without declaring a full embargo.

Israel imports about 70% of its arsenals from the United States, the world's largest arms exporter, while Germany is Israel's second-largest supplier. As of October 7, 2023, Berlin had exported weapons worth 485 million euros to Tel Aviv. Italy ranks third, supplying less than 1%.

Slovenia has been one of the most active EU countries in calling for action against Israel. It recognized the Palestinian state in June last year and has since frequently called for a ceasefire in Gaza and increased aid to the enclave.
