Smaller quantity, same price? - Greeks find solution to end traders' fraud

The era of the same label hiding less content in deceptively identical packaging is coming to an end. The Greek Ministry of Development, through a new provision, is trying to put an end to hidden increases and the confusion caused by reducing the quantity of products to consumers, without a corresponding reduction in their price.

The phenomenon of "shrink inflation", which has been widely exploited in the last two years, mainly by multinationals, will now be addressed with mandatory special labelling on supermarket shelves.

Any product that "loses weight" while maintaining the same price will now carry a clear label for at least two months. The responsibility for placing the label lies with supermarkets, but its cost is covered exclusively by manufacturers, or importers. For those who try to circumvent the law, the punishment will be severe, with fines starting from 5,000 euros and reaching up to 2,000,000 euros, while the name of the offender will be publicly announced.

At the same time, control of the market is being put into the hands of citizens themselves through the new MyKataggelies app. Available for Android and iOS, the app allows for the submission of named or anonymous complaints about speculation, enabling users to attach photos with GPS data and time stamps, ensuring immediate documentation of any violations.

This action takes on even greater importance at the current moment, as the war situation in the Middle East is creating pressure for price increases. The Ministry remains on full alert, having already carried out more than 500 inspections in recent days, with the aim of protecting consumers and combating any attempts to profit from fuel and essential goods.
