March 8 beyond flowers/ Albanian women in numbers: progress, but not full

On International Women's Day, statistics show that women in Albania are gaining more and more space in education and decision-making, but challenges still remain.

According to data published by INSTAT, women constitute 50.5% of the population in Albania, slightly more than men. In education, they significantly dominate with 65.8% of university graduates being women, while in the teaching staff of 9-year and secondary education women constitute over 70% of the total.

In the third quarter of last year, the employment rate for men aged 15-64 was 76.6%, while for women it was 62.7%, presenting a gender gap of 13.9 percentage points. The wage gap also persists, with men earning on average about 4.9% more than women.

Another challenge remains domestic violence. During 2024, 1,456 cases of raped women were reported, with the highest number of cases recorded in the Tirana district.

However, women's representation in decision-making is increasing. In Parliament, they occupy 35.7% of the seats, while more and more women are running businesses and institutions. According to INSTAT, about 31.4% of enterprises are owned or run by women. The highest participation of women in management is in trade.

On this March 8th, the figures show a two-sided reality: women are more educated and more present in public life, but still face inequalities in work, pay, and security.
