Teacher profile in Albania/ Average age around 43 years, 75% women and only 36% satisfied with salary

Teachers remain the most important factor in the quality of education and the development of new generations. At a time when technology, artificial intelligence, and social changes are transforming the way students learn, the role of the teacher has become more complex and important than ever.
The typical teacher in Albania is around 43 years old, in most cases a woman and with considerable experience in the education system. This is the panorama that emerges from the analysis of “Scan Intel” based on the results of the international survey Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2024 of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), one of the largest global studies that analyzes the profile and working conditions of teachers.
According to the report for Albania, the average age of teachers is 43 years old, slightly lower than the average for OECD countries which is around 45 years old. Around 32% of teachers are over 50 years old, while only 9% are under 30 years old, which shows that the education system relies mainly on a generation of experienced teachers.
Profession dominated by women
The teaching profession in Albania is dominated by women. According to the survey, 75% of teachers are women, a higher percentage than the average for OECD countries, where women make up about 70% of the teaching staff.
Most have chosen teaching as a profession
The report also shows that in Albania, the teaching profession continues to be a stable choice for many professionals. Only 2% of teachers entered the profession as a second career, while the vast majority chose education as their main profession.
At the same time, 85% of new teachers declare that teaching was their first professional choice, a percentage significantly higher than the OECD average.
Technology and artificial intelligence in the classroom
The report also shows that the use of technology is becoming increasingly present in the teaching process. In Albania, 52% of teachers declare that they have used artificial intelligence in their work during the last year.
Job stability
According to TALIS data, the Albanian education system is also characterized by a high level of job stability. 87% of teachers have permanent contracts, while only 4% work part-time.
However, while the majority of teachers are satisfied with their working conditions, only 36% are satisfied with their salary, an indicator that remains a challenge in many other education systems.
