Merz in Rome, meeting with Meloni "with new ideas" - Italian-German

A closer alliance between Italy and Germany is on the horizon, with the ambition to change Europe after decades of dominance by the Franco-German axis. In Davos, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke about the intergovernmental summit taking place this Friday in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Merz said he had worked out “new ideas” with Meloni to transform the European Union “which will be proposed soon.”

The change promised by Merz to end Europe's "potential lag" is part of the "new era led by great powers" that now seems to be driven by an Italian-German axis.

In Italy, the chancellor will discuss with Meloni "bilateral relations, European and economic policy issues, as well as security and defense policy issues," the German government said in a statement.

The turmoil on the international stage, caused in part by US President Donald Trump's threats to annex Greenland, has led the governments of Rome and Berlin to agree on various issues that were addressed Thursday evening at the European Council in Brussels.

The first is competitiveness, which Merz complains is Europe lagging behind. The media has highlighted Germany's alignment with Italy on migration policies and guarantees for the automotive industry, with a call for technological neutrality to achieve the goals of the EU Green Deal and not necessarily the elimination of internal combustion engines.

The "new Italian-German action plan" includes joint objectives and initiatives from the economy to technology to closer cooperation in the fields of defense and space, the media of both countries have announced.
