America one step away from breaking away from WHO - Gostin: "Clear legal violation, Trump is likely to succeed"

The United States will formally withdraw from the World Health Organization, facing accusations that it has harmed both American and global health. The decision violates a US law that requires Washington to pay the organization $260 million in dues.
President Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the organization on the first day of his presidency in 2025, via an executive order. Under US law, a one-year notice must be given and all dues paid before leaving.
A State Department spokesman said the WHO's failure to contain, manage and share information had cost the US trillions of dollars and that the president had stopped the future transfer of any form of support from the government.
"This is a clear violation of American law but Trump is very likely to get away with it," said Lawrence Gostin, founding director of the O'Neill Institute for Global Health Law, a close observer of the WHO.
For the WHO, the US withdrawal has caused a budget crisis that has led it to cut its management team in half, cutting its overall budget. America has traditionally been the largest financial supporter, contributing about 18% of its total funding.
Entrepreneur Bill Gates - a major funder of global health initiatives - said he did not expect the US to reconsider the decision in the short term.
