Europe is reassessing the relationship with the US - Chancellor Merz calls on

EU leaders will review their ties with the US at an emergency summit after Trump's threat of tariffs and military action to buy Greenland shook confidence in the transatlantic relationship.

Trump suddenly backed away from his threat of tariffs on eight European countries and ruled out using force to take Greenland, saying negotiations were on the horizon.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged the EU not to take hasty steps, considering the words of the American president. However, Europe remains observant, considering the development of a long-term plan on managing relations with the US.

The EU lacks the necessary intelligence, transportation, security, and production capabilities to defend itself from a potential Russian attack, a situation that implicates American influence.

"Trump says there will be no tariffs today, but does that mean there will be no tariffs tomorrow, or will he change his mind again? We need to discuss what we will do then," said an EU diplomat.

The EU had planned a package of retaliatory tariffs of 93 billion euros on US imports if Trump followed through on the threats, knowing that such a move would damage Europe's economy.

Some diplomats noted that there were still few details of the new plan for Greenland, agreed between Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos. Rutte said that under the framework agreement he reached with Trump, Western allies would have to increase their presence in the Arctic.
