Croatia has the most expensive olive oil in the EU - Price reached 136% above the European average in December
Croatian olive oil is the most expensive in the European Union, by a considerable margin from its competitors.
According to data from the European Commission, the average price for a kilogram of extra virgin olive oil in Croatia reached 14.13 euros in December. This figure is 136% above the EU average and 218% more than the cheapest oil in Portugal.
The situation eased slightly in January this year, with the price dropping to 11.46 euros per liter. But even this rate is still 79% higher than the EU average and 162% more expensive than Spain's budget option.
According to analysts, olive oil prices have increased significantly in recent years, mainly due to climate change and frequent droughts. Despite these challenges, demand for high-quality olive oil remains strong in gastronomy.
Unlike major producers like Spain and Italy, Croatia faces much higher production costs. Spain, for example, produced 1.3 million tons of olive oil last year, accounting for 48% of global production.
In contrast, Croatia produced only 6,000 tons. In addition, Croatian producers do not enjoy the same subsidies and incentives as in larger oil-producing countries, making price competition even more difficult.
Although production levels have stabilized, Croatian prices are not falling. One of the main reasons is the limited production volume, which is insufficient to create strong competition in the market.
Early estimates suggest that Croatia's self-sufficiency in olive oil was only about 40% in 2023, meaning the country would have to import at least 60% of its annual needs. With such a small market share, Croatia finds it difficult to influence prices and remains dependent on imports.
