July, record heat in France/ The average temperature across the country reached 24.9 degrees Celsius
July was the hottest month ever recorded in France since record keeping began in 1900, national weather agency Meteo France said. According to the agency, the average temperature across the country reached 24.9 degrees Celsius in July, surpassing the previous monthly record of 24.8 degrees Celsius set in August 2003.
The figure also surpassed the average temperature of 24.4 degrees Celsius recorded in July 2006, which had been among the warmest months ever recorded. France experienced another heatwave during the month, with temperatures rising well above seasonal norms in large parts of the country.
Hot, dry conditions also fueled wildfires in several areas, including the Gironde region near the southwestern city of Bordeaux, where firefighters battled multiple blazes.
Climate scientists have repeatedly warned that human-caused climate change is increasing the frequency, duration and intensity of heat waves around the world.
Europe is among the regions warming fastest, and France has experienced a series of unusually hot summers in recent years.
