Hungary seeks new president: Social networks propose personalities from science

The debate over choosing Hungary's new president has shifted to social media, where citizens are proposing a wide range of candidates, from science and culture figures to well-known internet figures.

Following the resignation of President Tamás Sulyok, Prime Minister Péter Magyar called on citizens, organizations, and public figures to suggest names for the new head of state, promising a more inclusive process.

In unofficial online polls, among the most mentioned names are András Arató, known worldwide as the character of the "Hide the Pain Harold" meme, Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Katalin Karikó, and Ernő Rubik, the inventor of the famous Rubik's Cube.

Content creator Eszter Jámbor, who opened a discussion with her Instagram followers, said the proposals ranged from television and sports figures to model Barbara Palvin, calling it a sign of the new political freedom the country is experiencing.

Magyar initially proposed chess champion Judit Polgár for the presidency, but she declined the nomination, and the prime minister apologized for the way the process was handled. After the episode, support for the ruling Tisza party fell by about 3%, according to polls.

Although citizens are actively participating in the debate through social networks and online petitions, there is still no official platform where they can submit their proposals for the next president. Tisza party lawmakers will have the final say in choosing the new head of state.
