Italy experiences hottest summer of the century - Temperatures reached 48

An unprecedented heat wave is hitting Italy, as meteorologists say this summer has been recorded as the hottest in the last hundred years. In July, the temperature record of 2003, which until now was considered the hottest year since scientific measurements began, was also broken.

The country's fourth consecutive heatwave is expected to last for at least another ten days. In the Afragola area of Naples, the thermometer reached 48 degrees Celsius. The Civil Protection announced that 26 towns were on "red" alert on Friday, the highest level of alert due to extreme heat. In Biselli, Puglia, an 81-year-old man died while preparing to dive into the sea, with the cause of death attributed to cardiac arrest due to the high temperatures.

Over the past two months, northern, central and southern regions of Italy have been under constant pressure, with incessant heat waves. In Sardinia, farmers and livestock farmers who have suffered significant damage due to the heat and drought have requested the declaration of a state of emergency to receive immediate state support.

In Genoa, the municipality decided to extend free entry to citizens over 65 to a number of museums during the hottest hours of the day. Meanwhile, in the Ancona region, with the support of volunteers, food is being delivered to the homes of the elderly to protect them from the heat.
