The Dutch central bank (DNB) has moved 86 tons of gold from the United States and Canada to London, justifying the decision with "increasing geopolitical unrest" and the need to increase crisis preparedness.

According to the DNB, gold held in London can be traded more quickly and easily than reserves stored in New York and Ottawa. This gives the bank the ability to use its reserves more quickly in an emergency situation.

"With this step, we have improved the deployment of gold reserves," the DNB president declared, adding that the bank hopes not to need to use them, but needs to strengthen its resilience and preparedness.

At the end of 2025, the Netherlands had a total of 612.4 tons of gold, worth around 72.2 billion euros.

Before the move, 31.3% of Dutch gold was held in New York and 19.7% in Ottawa. After the operation, the share of reserves held in these two locations has dropped to 18.5%.

Meanwhile, the share of gold stored in London has increased significantly, from 18.1% to 32.1%. The Netherlands continues to hold 30.8% of gold reserves within its territory.

DNB announced that the operation was carried out through a combination of purchases and sales in the market, as well as the physical transfer of gold.

More than 27 tons of physical gold were transported from the US and Canada to Zeist in the Netherlands. An equal amount was then shipped from Zeist to London, avoiding the need to melt down existing bullion.

According to the Dutch bank, combining financial transactions with physical transport helped spread the risks associated with moving a large amount of gold.

The move comes at a time when central banks around the world are paying greater attention to the safety of reserves and asset diversification, amid heightened geopolitical uncertainties and tensions.
