AI, like electricity in the industrial age - Altman: It will be the foundation for future technological revolutions
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that countries that do not embrace artificial intelligence risk missing out on future technological advances, comparing the importance of technology to the use of electricity more than a century ago. Speaking with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Altman said that Artificial Intelligence was the latest step in a long chain of technological revolutions and would serve as the foundation for future innovations.
“People will use AI to invent whatever comes next,” Altman said. “If you don’t enable people and businesses to use AI, they won’t be able to invent the next level of development,” he added.
Altman argued that artificial intelligence would significantly accelerate innovation, especially for entrepreneurs and startups, saying that tools such as OpenAI’s Codex are already reducing the time it takes to develop and test new ideas. “Of course, artificial intelligence will transform big companies and, of course, it will transform governments, but what it can do for entrepreneurs and for people who have an idea and want to bring it to the world is truly amazing,” Altman said.
He added that the world has yet to fully grasp how quickly artificial intelligence can advance, especially in product development and helping businesses gather feedback and ratings from customers. Altman urged governments to embrace the technology, saying that doing otherwise would be comparable to turning off electricity during the industrial era. The OpenAI chief concluded by saying that future generations will grow up in a world where intelligent systems will be integrated into all products and services.
