Greece is "roasted" by fires at the height of the tourist season -

At the height of the summer season, Greece is facing an alarming situation due to fires that are engulfing popular tourist areas. The island of Chios is one of the most affected spots, where several fires broke out simultaneously and have so far burned about 40,000 hectares of land.

Meanwhile, south of Athens, in the coastal area of Palaia Fokaia, fires have engulfed apartments and holiday homes, forcing residents and holidaymakers to evacuate. 130 firefighters, supported by 12 aircraft and 12 helicopters, are engaged in efforts to tackle the flames, which have been exacerbated by strong winds and extreme temperatures that reached 38°C on Thursday.

Firefighter spokesman Vasilios Vathrakogiannis said 40 people had been rescued, while the coast guard had intervened to assist with other possible evacuations.

"Firefighters are fighting a major battle with the flames, especially near homes," he said, noting that a coastal road in the area has been closed for safety.

Footage shows thick smoke over green areas that have already been scorched, giving the situation a dramatic look in the middle of a season that traditionally fills Greece with tourists.

Fires and floods, exacerbated by climate change, have become an annual challenge for the neighboring country. Greek authorities have significantly increased investment in modern equipment and logistics, as well as increased the number of firefighters to a record 18,000, in preparation for what is expected to be one of the most difficult summers on record.
