Greece slows down - Economic growth to contract in the second quarter of 2025

The Greek economy grew at a rate of 1.7% in the second quarter, on an annual basis, compared with a growth of 2.2% in the first quarter of the year, according to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

This means that the average growth rate for the first half of 2025 reached only about 2% on an annual basis, although the government is talking about a rate of 2.3% in this period. ELSTAT data also shows a 0.6% expansion on a quarterly basis for the April-June time interval.

According to the statistical service, consumption is slowing down, showing only a 1% increase on an annual basis and a 0.1% decrease compared to the previous quarter. However, investments are showing high rates, with an expansion of 6.5% compared to 2024 and 7.4% compared to the previous quarter.

Meanwhile, a decline has been reflected in exports of goods, while exports of services continue to grow due to tourism.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance stated that the Greek economy is currently growing at an annual rate of 2.3%, which is much higher than most other European economies.

"Of course we can do better, we will make more reforms. The world expects more from us, and reforms are the only way to move forward," ministry sources said.
