Trump threatens EU with trade investigation - President calls fines against Apple and Google "discriminatory"

US President Donald Trump has warned that he will order a trade investigation to "overturn" what he called discriminatory fines being imposed by Europe against technology firms such as Google and Apple. "We cannot allow this to happen to our companies and if it does, I will be forced to initiate a Section 301 proceeding to overturn the unfair fines being imposed on these American tax-paying companies," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump threatened the union hours after Google was fined nearly $3.5 billion by the European Union in an antitrust investigation focused on its online advertising business. The tweet also came a day after Trump hosted a White House dinner with a group of top tech executives who praised the president for the job he is doing. Google CEO Sundar Pichai thanked Trump after a U.S. judge ruled in favor of parent company Alphabet. Pichai said he appreciated the administration’s “constructive dialogue.”
The US president accused the European Union “of actually taking money that would have gone to investment and jobs in America.” “This reaction comes due to the many fines and other taxes that have been issued against Google and American technology companies, in particular,” Trump wrote on social media.
In another tweet, Trump said Google had previously paid $13 billion in “false claims and accusations.” It was not clear where that figure came from, despite the company recently facing a series of large regulatory fines. Trump also criticized the EU for collecting billions of dollars from Apple in back taxes and fines for alleged anti-competitive practices.
The post claims that Apple has been fined $17 billion, but that figure appears to include a 2024 court ruling in Ireland that ordered the company to pay over $14 billion in back taxes. “Apple must get its money back!” Trump wrote.
