OpenAI challenges the semiconductor market - Startup will produce the first

OpenAI is expected to produce its own artificial intelligence chip next year, in partnership with US semiconductor giant Broadcom, according to the Financial Times. The startup plans to use this chip for its own internal needs and not sell it to external customers, a person close to the project said.

OpenAI, which helped commercialize generative artificial intelligence capable of producing near-human answers to questions, relies on massive computing power to train and operate its systems.

Last year, Reuters reported that OpenAI was working with Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to develop its first in-house chip, which would power innovative technology systems, also including chips from AMD and Nvidia to meet growing demand. At the time, OpenAI had been considering several options to diversify supply and reduce costs.

The creator of ChatGPT is in the final stages of its first chip and plans to send it for production to TSMC, according to Reuters sources.

A senior Broadcom executive said the company expects a significant increase in artificial intelligence revenue for fiscal 2026 after securing more than $10 billion in orders from an unnamed new customer. Earlier this year, he hinted at four potential new customers who were “deeply engaged” in creating their own custom chips, in addition to three large existing customers.

OpenAI's move follows efforts by companies like Google, Amazon and Meta, which have built their own custom chips to handle artificial intelligence workloads as demand for computing power grows.
