Noise, a problem in most cities - Tirana and Vlora are at the top of the list, due to road traffic and bars

Monitoring conducted in 2024 in 13 cities in the country shows that noise pollution continues to be a worrying problem. According to data from the National Environment Agency, the noise level during the day exceeds the limit of 55 decibels in all monitored cities, with the exception of Lushnja. Tirana is the most problematic, where the exceedance reaches 15% above the norm, followed by Vlora, Saranda and Gjirokastra.
Even at night, where the permitted limit is 45 decibels, the situation is the same. Almost all cities register exceedances, with the highest figures in Vlora, Tirana and Saranda. Meanwhile, only Kukës, Përmet and Lushnja remain within the permitted limits.
The main cause of noise emissions is road traffic, while in many areas, especially at night, premises also pose a problem.
Continuous exposure to noise causes health problems such as: Hearing problems, brain inflammation, bad mood, weak immunity, lack of concentration or sleep problems. It also causes psychological problems (aggressiveness, impatience), inhibition in the speed of communication, changes in the hormonal and immune systems, etc.
The National Environment Agency proposes a series of measures to reduce noise pollution. These include the creation of green belts with trees between residential areas and main roads. It also requires the determination of distances between roads and homes by regulation, as well as the provision of noise-reducing measures at the design stage of new construction.
Another important point is the periodic inspection of vehicles that generate noise, intervention in road signage, and the placement of warning signs at certain points.
