"Fires are fueling air pollution" - OBM warns of serious consequences for health and the environment
Fires contributed significantly to air pollution last year, according to a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). “Flames are a constant source of pollutants in the atmosphere,” said Lorenzo Labrador, a member of the organization.
The UN meteorological body noted that there is a complex link between air quality and climate change. Burning fossil fuels, fires and other human activities such as transportation and agriculture release tiny particles called aerosols, which pollute the air. “Air quality and climate change need to be treated as interrelated issues. They cannot be considered in isolation,” Labrador said.
The report, which focuses on air quality worldwide through 2024, identified areas of high pollution in regions affected by severe fires, such as the Amazon basin, Canada, Siberia and Central Africa.
Conditions for wildfires in places like the Amazon are expected to worsen as climate change accelerates, according to the World Meteorological Organization. These fires pose increasing health risks as they increase the concentration of aerosols in the atmosphere and contribute to air pollution.
The document also warned that the impact of Europe's wildfires on air quality could be felt beyond borders this year. "The heavy emissions from the fires in the Iberian Peninsula have the potential to worsen air quality not only over cities in Spain and Portugal, but also over the rest of Western Europe," the report said.
However, the data also reflected some positive signals. Eastern China has seen a decline in particulate pollution, thanks to measures taken by relevant authorities.
According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is responsible for over 4.5 million premature deaths each year.
