Solar energy "dominates" the planet - Global photovoltaic

Global installed solar power capacity increased by 380 GW during the first half of 2025, a 64% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Solar power plants have become the fastest growing source of new power generation. In 2024, global solar power production increased by 28%, adding 469 TWh, more than any other source.

China continues to dominate this growth. During the first half of 2025, its photovoltaic installations were over 100% higher year-on-year, and the country accounted for 67% of new global capacity, up from 54% in the first half of 2024.

This growth has been driven by developers scrambling to complete projects before new solar and wind offset rules take effect in June. However, Ember notes that strong Chinese demand for clean supplies suggests 2025 will break last year's record for solar installations.

For the rest of the world, new installations reach around 124 GW, reflecting a 15% increase compared to the same period in 2024. India ranks second with 24 GW, an increase of 49%, while the United States is in third place with an increase of 4%, despite government policies that limit the development of clean energies.

Other countries contributed an additional 65 GW, +22% compared to the first half of 2024. Solar energy became the EU’s most important source for the first time in June 2025, with 22.1% of total supply, overtaking nuclear and wind. However, the bloc is expected to install less new solar capacity this year compared to last year. This would be the first annual decline this decade.

Ember predicts that 2025 will mark another historic record for global solar energy.
