Greeks are "cutting back" on everything/ Record drop in daily expenses
Greek consumers have significantly reduced their daily spending. In June, average spending per user fell significantly across all major spending categories, following a broader trend of restraint and shifting priorities ahead of the summer.
The largest monthly declines (compared to May) were recorded in the Personal Care & Fitness (-50%), Food (-50%) and Clothing & Accessories (-45%). Meanwhile, the Supermarkets (-4%) and Transportation (-23%) categories recorded milder downward trends, reflecting a broader effort by households to limit their budgets.
This picture may reflect a strategic pause: many consumers appear to be waiting for summer sales, cutting energy consumption, or saving money for vacations. While inflation appears to have peaked, some of the spending cuts may reflect a price decline. However, the continued decline in consumption also highlights a more conscious and cautious attitude of consumers towards their budgets.
One of the clearest messages in the data is the continued decline in spending on Dining Out and Catering, which fell by -50% month-on-month in June. This category has now recorded five consecutive months of decline, suggesting that dining out may be one of the first luxuries to be abandoned when the pressure increases.
A similar trend was followed by spending on Entertainment (-14%) and Personal Care (-50%), despite the seasonal peak levels recorded in spring.
Unlike previous periods, where cuts were mainly in non-essential spending, the June figures clearly show that even basic categories such as supermarkets, bills and transport are being hit. Greek consumers also seem to be reassessing their daily habits. This reflects not only economic uncertainty, but also a growing financial awareness.
