Germany plans to double armed forces - Over 100,000 active soldiers needed to meet NATO objectives
Germany needs to add 100,000 active-duty soldiers to the 62,000 it currently has to meet NATO objectives aimed at increasing preparedness against the Russian threat, the army commander said in a confidential document, according to Reuters.
“It is imperative that the army becomes sufficiently combat-ready by 2029 and provides the capabilities that Germany has promised to NATO by 2035,” the official sources said. Achieving these goals is impossible with the current personnel level, which also includes 37,000 inactive soldiers.
Germany has already begun increasing commitments to allies in Eastern Europe, including the creation of a German brigade in Lithuania with around 5,000 soldiers and a maritime patrol mission in the Baltic to counter underwater sabotage.
The head of the German army called for an additional 45,000 active-duty soldiers by 2029, when the US-led alliance predicts Russia could be capable of launching a large-scale attack on Western allies. Meanwhile, Moscow has consistently denied plans for war against NATO or its members.
In addition, to meet objectives and build reserves for a long war like the one the Kremlin is waging in Ukraine, the German military foresees the need for another 45,000 active troops by 2035. In addition, about 10,000 additional soldiers are needed to strengthen territorial defense.
In June, the Defense Ministry announced that Germany would need up to 60,000 additional active-duty personnel across all military branches to meet new NATO objectives, bringing the Bundeswehr's future strength to around 260,000 soldiers.
