G7 discusses new measures against Russia - US asks allies to impose tariffs on Russian oil buyers

The G7 countries are considering imposing new sanctions and tariffs on Russia and countries supporting the war in Ukraine. At the same time, the US is calling on allies to punish buyers of Russian oil, especially China and India.
Finance ministers from the Group of Seven major economies met on Wednesday to discuss new sanctions on Russia and possible tariffs on countries seen as supporting the war in Ukraine. The move comes as the United States is calling on allies to impose tariffs on buyers of Russian oil to increase economic pressure on the Kremlin.
The meeting was held under the current G7 presidency of Canada. In an official statement after the meeting, it was announced that the ministers agreed to accelerate discussions on the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine's defense. The statement added that the ministers discussed a "wide range of possible economic measures to increase pressure on Russia, including additional sanctions and trade measures."
US officials urged G7 countries to join the US in imposing tariffs on countries that continue to buy oil from Russia. “Only with a united effort that cuts off the war machine’s revenues at the source can we exert sufficient economic pressure to stop the senseless killing,” they said.
Earlier in the day, a US Treasury Department spokesman called on G7 countries and the European Union to impose "severe tariffs" especially on goods from China and India, which buy Russian oil at low prices.
President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25% tax on imports from India to punish New Delhi. The decision brings the tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, straining trade talks between the two countries. However, Trump has so far avoided imposing new measures on China due to a fragile trade truce between Washington and Beijing.
