"Germany should stay in green energy" - Habeck responds to Trump: We

Sticking to growth plans for green energy is the best response to Donald Trump after the US president's "fatal" move to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck said.

"We need to bring our technologies to the forefront," said Habeck, the architect of plans to have 80% of total energy in Germany green by 2030.

The move by Trump, a climate change skeptic, to withdraw from the Paris climate treaty was widely expected and further threatens the agreement's central goal of limiting a rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, holds national elections on February 23, with Habeck's Greens trailing in opinion polls as a cost-of-living crisis and economic downturn have shifted some voters' focus away from climate protection.

Economy Minister Habeck said that relying on domestically produced green energy remains the best response to dependence on energy imports and high costs, especially as Russian gas supplies to Europe are dwindling following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Habeck urged parliament to pass a bill that gives more digital control of renewable capacity expansion to help curb rising costs and lower consumer bills.

Another unfinished plan, a capacity market for energy, was also a priority, he said. Otherwise, coal-fired power plants, which provide a stable supply, would have to operate beyond their intended 2030 shutdown date.

The chief executive of power transmission firm TenneT said the new German government must take a number of key steps to support the spread of green energy.

Network operators should also be allowed to increase their tariffs as they are too low to attract international investors into the networks, he added.
