303 foreign exchange points in Tirana alone - BoA: In 2024, 24 licenses were removed, but 13% were added compared to 2023
In 2024, the number of foreign exchange points throughout the country increased, but on the other hand, the number of entities whose licenses were revoked by the Bank of Albania also increased.
The latest data shows that 46 new currency exchange points were licensed during 2024, 13% less than in the previous year. Currently, there are a total of 640 currency exchange offices in Albania. Official statistics from the Central Bank show that about 303 currency exchange points are located in Tirana alone, 42 in Durrës, while the remainder are distributed in other cities in the country.
On the other hand, the Bank of Albania has revoked the licenses of 24 foreign exchange offices. While in 2023, 14 foreign exchange offices were prohibited from operating, last year it turns out that 10 more licenses were revoked, most of which were in Tirana.
The Bank of Albania conducts continuous inspections of foreign exchange offices. The main reasons for the revocation of licenses are related to the non-implementation of legal and regulatory obligations related to money laundering and terrorist financing by foreign exchange offices. In the next financial supervision report of the Bank of Albania, more details on the reasons for the revocations are expected to be published.
Also, in the first 15 days of the current month, 2 other foreign exchange point licenses were revoked.
