The year 2024 "weakened" foreign trade/ Exports are not only worth less, but also weigh less
Foreign trade figures continued to be affected by exchange rate dynamics throughout 2024. Scan Intel previously analyzed the impact of the main groups and the annual change in value for each. The annual decline in exports was mainly dominated by the negative impact of fuels and textiles.
This decline is mainly a result of the depreciation of the euro, which has reduced the income of Albanian exporters when converted into lek. This has led to exporters receiving less for the same amount of exported products, thus reducing profits and increasing pressure on the textile and footwear sector.
To better see this impact, this time "Scan Intel" has analyzed the figures in volume, that is, in quantity, to "undress" them in a way from the effect of the euro. If we look at the data, it turns out that exports in volume for 2024, compared to a year earlier, have decreased by 3.5%. If we analyze the main groups, the highest decrease in exports in quantity was observed in leather goods and textiles and footwear, by 24.4% and 10.5%. According to the data, all groups, except chemical products and food, show a decrease in volume.
But how are the weighted data presented in terms of annual import change for the main groups?
The figures show a different situation in terms of import volume. In total, imports in volume increased by 13.6% in 2024, compared to the previous year. All groups, with the exception of leather goods, showed an increase. The largest increase in import weight was recorded by machinery and spare parts with 19.9%, followed by minerals and fuels with 18.4%.
