Green hydrogen connects Europe with Africa - Agreement signed for the construction of the Southern Corridor
The agreement is signed for the construction project of the Southern Hydrogen Corridor (SouthH2Corridor), which runs along 3,300 kilometers from North Africa through Italy, Austria and Germany.
The pipeline, which is expected to enter into operation from January 1, 2030, represents an essential part of the EU's energy transition objectives and the diversification of supply lines.
The corridor will connect North Africa, Italy, Austria and Germany, allowing the supply of low-cost hydrogen produced in the South to major European energy groups.
With a hydrogen import capacity of 4 million tons per year from North Africa, the infrastructure could meet more than 40% of RepowerEU's import target.
The initiative is based on the use of existing, up-to-date infrastructure for hydrogen transportation, with the inclusion of new dedicated infrastructure where necessary.
A high percentage of redeveloped gas pipelines (60-70%) will allow for economical transportation, while access to favorable locations for renewable hydrogen production (wind and solar) in North Africa will favor competitive production, allowing the end user to benefit from it.
The corridor has gained strong support from buyers and warehousing operators along the entire route.
