Germany towards a European military "Starlink" - Berlin plans to invest 35 billion euros in space technology

Germany is accelerating investments in military space, paving the way for the construction of a new European strategic infrastructure.
According to the Financial Times, Berlin is considering creating a secure and autonomous military satellite system, comparable to SpaceX's Starlink network.
The project aims to guarantee stable and protected communications for military and intelligence operations, through a constellation of satellites in low orbit. The main goal is to reduce dependence on suppliers outside Europe, especially the United States.
Berlin has announced a 35 billion euro investment plan for military space technologies, at a time when the experience of the war in Ukraine has shown the crucial role of satellite systems in maintaining communications in extreme conditions.
According to German military authorities, the project will be developed mainly with local companies and will have NATO's eastern flank as an operational priority. Germany is strengthening its military presence in Lithuania, where a permanent brigade of around 5,000 soldiers is expected to be established.
The project also includes major defense and space industry companies, such as Rheinmetall and OHB, which see this initiative as a new strategic growth front.
With these investments, Germany aims to position itself as one of the leading global players in the military space, while simultaneously strengthening Europe's strategic autonomy in an increasingly important sector for security.
