Europe is building 147 energy storage plants - According to the European Commission, the projects will add 14 GW of capacity
147 energy storage projects are under construction in Europe, with a total capacity of 14 GW, according to the Energy Storage Inventory, an initiative of the European Commission.
The European Energy Storage Inventory includes operational, under construction, permitted and announced energy storage projects across Europe. A real-time energy storage dashboard also includes their locations and technologies, such as chemical, electrochemical, mechanical and thermal storage.
Europe currently has 913 energy storage facilities in operation, with a combined capacity of 67 GW. The dominant technology is mechanical storage (54.6 GW) with pumped storage hydropower. However, electrochemical storage, including lithium-ion and flow batteries, is reaching 11 GW.
Among the 147 projects under construction, electrochemical storage is the leading technology, with 10.4 GW, followed by pumped storage hydropower, with 2.7 GW. So far, the largest number of projects are in the United Kingdom, with 66 such projects with a capacity of 6.2 GW. Italy ranks second with 13 projects totaling 1.7 GW, followed by Germany with 19 plants, but with 1.6 GW of capacity.
With the ambition to accelerate the uptake of renewable energies, as well as in the broader context of the EU's climate neutrality objective, energy storage has become increasingly important to ensure security of supply, the European Commission said.
The energy storage inventory is added to the European Interconnection Platform for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which acts as a meeting point for all contributors to energy research and innovation from across Europe.
