ETIAS, deadline for entry into force postponed - The new system for the Schengen

The introduction of ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorization System, which aims to improve border security, has been postponed again.

This travel permit was due to become a requirement for non-EU travellers in 2026, but the EU now plans to introduce it at the end of next year with a grace period, meaning it will not be mandatory until 2027.

Under the new ETIAS rules, travelers who do not need a visa from non-EU countries, including the UK, will need to obtain authorization before short stays in the Schengen Area.

This will require completing an online application, personal details, security questions and a fee of 7 euros. This authorization will be linked to the traveler's passport and will be valid for three years or until the passport expires.

Travelers from 60 non-EU countries will need to fill out the ETIAS form, but there are some exceptions. The fee will be waived for children under 18 and adults over 70, although they will still need to apply for authorization.

The authorisation cannot enter into force until six months after the Entry-Exit System is fully operational at all borders of the Schengen area. The installation of the new technology required for this system is facing complications and delays, with dozens of member states not ready for the planned launch.

Since the EU has now decided on a phased extension of the Entry-Exit System over a six-month period, entering into force at the first borders in October 2025, the introduction of ETIAS should be further postponed.

ETIAS is said to be operational in the last quarter of 2026, but even then it will remain optional for another six months, meaning travelers may not have to pay the fee until 2027.
