Forced salary increase for over 143 thousand employees - 7 million euros of

Over 143,000 employees across the country have benefited from mandatory salary increases throughout 2024.

Data from the annual report of the General Directorate of Taxes shows that the results of the anti-informality campaign undertaken in October last year have been positive for 143,126 employees in various sectors who were under-declared.

But how are they divided by sector and who has benefited the most?

The sector with the highest number of positions with growth is that of services, which includes hotels, bars, restaurants in urban areas and tourist centers, with 46,508 positions that have had an increase in declared salary.

Followed by the manufacturing sector, which includes various manufacturing entities but also tailoring, where salaries have increased for 38,147 employees.

Next in line is the trade sector, where 34,488 employees benefited, the construction sector also had a significant number of employees whose salaries were revised, recorded at 18,913, while in the transport sector, salaries changed for only 5,070 employees. Those positions where the increase is more than 10% were considered to have a salary increase.

The increase in the declared salary translates into more revenue for the state coffers from the personal income tax item as well as more benefits for employees, in terms of temporary disability reports or a higher pension in the future.

From the review of wage declarations by businesses, additional income from contributions is recorded at approximately 7 million euros. In the context of the fight against informality in the labor market, action has been taken both in creating risk criteria to identify non-compliant taxpayers and in sending awareness messages to encourage voluntary compliance.

In October 2024, POP-UP awareness messages were sent to the entire population of registered taxpayers. In November 2024, messages were sent to 30,159 taxpayers identified as at risk.

1,452 inspection visits were carried out by the tax administration, of which 16 were by the Tax Investigation structures.

860 taxpayers have been sent for assessment and inspection by the State Labor Inspectorate within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the relevant institutions.
