Agricultural census postponed to 2026 - Reason: elections. Work begins on establishing electronic platform
The Agricultural Census, which includes counting farms and livestock across the country, will be postponed to 2026.
Although it was planned to be carried out this year, after the Population and Housing Census, the reason for the postponement is related to the general parliamentary elections which will be held on May 11, 2025.
INSTAT has begun the preparatory phase for the implementation of the Agricultural Census, which will play a crucial role in updating the necessary statistical information at the local and regional level and reflecting the changes that have occurred in this sector in more than a decade.
Work is currently underway to set up and put into operation the electronic data collection platform, while the field survey will be conducted next year.
A module of questions was included in the Population and Housing Census questionnaire, with the aim of creating a list of agricultural farms, which will serve as a selection basis for the next agricultural census, due to the lack of an administrative register of farms.
Trained surveyors will visit agricultural economic units throughout the country to collect data based on the Census questionnaire. Standardized procedures will be followed to maintain confidentiality and accuracy throughout the data collection process. The Census of Agriculture will provide information on specific modules on all agricultural farms related to: irrigation, land management practices, machinery and equipment, and fruit growing, which derive from the implementation of the European Commission regulations on Farm Structure Surveys, with reference year 2023, for EU member states.
The Agricultural Census will also provide data on the structure of agriculture, especially for small administrative units.
The material basis for carrying out this process is the one used for the 2023 Housing Census, while a total cost has not yet been calculated.
INSTAT will also collaborate with other institutions, especially the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, to create a reliable and updated framework/list to be used for field data collection.
A dedicated communication strategy will be developed and finalized for the Census of Agriculture, which aims to raise awareness and highlight the importance of the Census of Agriculture among the target audience.
This process was initially scheduled to be carried out during the period October-December 2024.
