Which is the safest country in the world? - Europe dominates the list of the top 15 countries
Insurance company Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has released its latest ranking of the safest places to travel, using data from the Global Peace Index. The data was analyzed along with a survey of American travelers who visited selected destinations over the past five years.
The Netherlands came in first place, thanks to its high ranking in the Global Peace Index and Numbeo, as well as the fact that The Hague and Eindhoven were among the 12 safest cities. Travelers also praised it for its health measures and for being a safe destination for women and people of color. However, travel experts warn tourists to be wary of cyclists, as many Dutch cities have their own bike lanes, and pedestrians should look both ways before crossing the road.
Australia came in second, but most of the countries at the top of the list were from Europe. According to the data, of the 10 safest countries in the world for travelers in 2026, five are in Europe. Meanwhile, in the list of the 15 safest countries, two-thirds belong to the old continent.
Following the Netherlands and Australia are Austria, which is praised for its peace and security for tourists, and Iceland. The latter ranked first last year and continues to be considered the most peaceful country in the world according to the Global Peace Index. However, the eruption of the Sundhnúksgígar volcano led to the evacuation of many residents and tourists, lowering the safety rating.
Canada ranks fifth, followed by New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Japan and Ireland.
The 15 safest countries also include Belgium, Portugal, France, the United Kingdom and Denmark.
