OpenAI introduces “ChatGPT Atlas” - New AI-powered browser

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, a long-awaited web browser powered by artificial intelligence. The browser is built around the popular ChatGPT chatbot and aims to challenge the dominance of Google Chrome.

The launch marks OpenAI’s latest step in tapping into ChatGPT’s 800 million weekly active users. The company is expanding its presence into many aspects of people’s online lives, collecting data about their browsing behavior. The new browser could accelerate the shift toward AI-powered search as more users prefer conversational tools that summarize information rather than Google’s traditional keyword-driven results.

Atlas is part of a market already crowded with similar browsers powered by the new technology, such as Perplexity's Comet, Brave Browser and Opera's Neon, as companies race to integrate tools that scrape pages, fill out forms and write code to engage users.

Atlas allows users to open a sidebar with ChatGPT on any page to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data. In “agent mode,” which is currently only available to paid users, ChatGPT can interact with websites on the user’s behalf, performing end-to-end tasks, such as searching for and purchasing tickets for a trip.

During a demo, OpenAI developers showed how ChatGPT could find a recipe online and then automatically purchase all the ingredients. The agent navigated to the Instacart site and added the necessary groceries to the cart, a task that took a few minutes.

The browser is now available worldwide for Apple's macOS system, with versions for Windows, iOS and Android coming later.
