Greek supermarkets, among the cheapest in Europe. Product prices, up to 33%

Prices in Greek supermarkets remain lower compared to countries such as France, England, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Romania, according to a study by the Institute for Research in Consumer Goods Retailing.

The study is based on data from price comparison platforms and invoices from supermarket chains, recording the cost of a typical basket of products for the month of September 2025. The comparison includes organized food trade in eight European countries: Greece, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany and Romania.

The analysis includes 40 product categories and over 6,000 prices from 44 different supermarket chains. The data only includes products from supermarkets, not other points of sale.

According to the results, other countries present higher average costs for the family basket: 33% more expensive in Germany, 30% in France, 10% in the United Kingdom, 15% in Italy, 12% in Spain, 15% in Romania and 1% in Portugal.

When the relevant VAT is removed, the difference becomes even more pronounced. Germany is 39% more expensive, France 38%, the United Kingdom and Italy 22%, Spain 18%, Romania 17% and Portugal 4%.

This difference is mainly a result of different VAT rates on food. In Greece, VAT is 13%, while in other countries it ranges from 0% to 10%. For example, in France the rates are 10% and 5.5%, in Spain 10% and 4%, in Italy 10% and 4%, while in Germany 7%.

The main difference is that products that are subject to the medium VAT rate in Greece are included in the lower rate in other countries, reducing the final prices. There are very few cases where products have a higher VAT outside Greece, such as the case of baby wipes. Other taxes, such as those imposed on coffee, are not included in the comparison.

The institute notes that organized food trade in Greece manages to offer lower prices to consumers, as a result of a coordinated effort by suppliers and businesses to keep costs under control. This trend has remained stable over the past 12 years, during which this study was conducted.
