China "overtakes" the US - Becomes Germany's largest trading partner in 2025
China has regained the top spot as Germany's largest trading partner during the first eight months of 2025, surpassing the United States, according to preliminary data from the German statistics office.
Germany's imports and exports with China totaled 163.4 billion euros from January to August, while trade with the United States was slightly lower, at 162.8 billion euros, according to Reuters calculations.
In 2024, the US was Berlin's largest trading partner, ending an eight-year run in which China held the top spot. This came as Germany sought to reduce its dependence on Beijing, citing political differences and accusations of unfair trade practices.
However, the trade dynamics changed again this year, with Donald Trump returning to the White House and imposing new tariffs. These tariffs have significantly reduced German exports to the US, which fell by 7.4% in the first eight months of the year compared to 2024, to 99.6 billion euros. In August alone, shipments to the US shrank by 23.5% compared to August last year, indicating that the decline is accelerating.
"There is no doubt that US trade and tariff policy is one of the main reasons for the decline in sales," market analysts explain. They add that American demand for classic German export goods, such as vehicles, machinery and chemicals, has shrunk significantly. Due to the ongoing threat of tariffs and the strengthening euro, exports to the US are not expected to recover anytime soon.
On the other hand, shipments to China fell even more than those to the US, down 13.5% year-on-year, to 54.7 billion euros in the first eight months of the year. Meanwhile, imports from Beijing expanded by 8.3%, to 108.8 billion euros.
Experts warn that this not only increases Germany's dependence on China, but could also add pressure on key industries where Beijing has become a strong competitor.
