Britain-EU, details of the agreement reached - The pact includes strengthening

Britain and the European Union have reached a historic post-Brexit deal that includes defence and trade cooperation. European leaders called it a major step towards a new era in bilateral relations.

The UK has agreed to the most significant re-establishment of defence and trade relations with the European Union since Brexit.

Almost nine years after voting to leave the bloc, Britain reached a broad deal with the EU, including a security and defense pact, as well as fewer restrictions on British exporters and visitors.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who supported remaining in the EU during the Brexit referendum, emphasized the benefits for Britons, such as faster electronic gates at EU airports. Accompanied by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Starmer said the deal marked "a new era in our relationship."

Von der Leyen said that "at a time of global instability, when our continent faces the greatest threat it has faced for generations, we in Europe stand united."

Britain highlighted that re-alignment with its largest trading partner would reduce red tape for agricultural producers, making food cheaper, improving energy security and, by 2040, add almost £9 billion to the economy.

At the heart of the deal is a defense and security pact that will pave the way for British companies to participate in a €150 billion program to rearm Europe.

For fishing, British and EU vessels will have access to each other's waters for 12 years. In return, the bloc will ease border controls that have hampered food exports from British producers.
