China imposes tariffs on plastic products - The measure targets imports from the

China has imposed tariffs on some plastic imports from the United States, the European Union and Japan. The measures come amid trade tensions with the US and concerns about the stability of the global trading system.

China has announced the imposition of tariffs of up to 74.9% on imports of POM (Polyoxymethylene) copolymers, a type of engineering plastic, coming from the United States, the European Union, Japan and Taiwan.

The Commerce Department's findings conclude an investigation launched in May 2024, shortly after the U.S. sharply increased tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, computer chips and other imports.

These types of copolymers can partially replace metals such as copper and zinc, and have various applications including automotive parts, electronics and medical devices, the ministry said.

In January, the ministry said initial investigations had determined that there were unfair pricing practices and violations of competition law. The highest rates of 74.9% were imposed on imports from the United States, while European shipments will face tariffs of 34.5%, according to the announcement.

China imposed tariffs of 35.5% on Japanese imports, except for Asahi Kasei Corp, which will pay a rate of 24.5%. Also, general duties of 32.6% were imposed on imports from Taiwan.

The measures came despite growing hopes of an easing in the US-China trade conflict after both sides agreed to reduce reciprocal tariffs in a 90-day truce. Chinese state-run Global Times said the deal should be extended beyond three months.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group of countries warned of "fundamental challenges" facing the global trading system, after a meeting in South Korea.
