"Russia and Ukraine should immediately begin ceasefire talks" - Trump

Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine would immediately begin ceasefire negotiations after a phone call with Vladimir Putin. He did not indicate a willingness to impose sanctions on Moscow, unlike European leaders.

White House President Donald Trump said after a phone call with President Vladimir Putin that Russia and Ukraine would immediately begin negotiations on a ceasefire, but the Kremlin said the process would take time. The US leader indicated that he was not ready to join Europe in imposing new sanctions to pressure Moscow.

In a post on social media, Trump said he conveyed the plan to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, as well as the leaders of the European Union, France, Italy, Germany and Finland after speaking with the Russian leader.

"Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin negotiations towards a ceasefire and, most importantly, towards an end to the war," Trump said, adding later that "progress is being made."

Putin thanked the US leader for supporting the resumption of direct talks between Moscow and Kiev after the two sides met in Turkey last week. But after the call, he said only that the efforts were "generally on the right track."

"We have agreed with the president of the United States that Russia will propose and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on a memorandum on a possible future peace agreement," Putin told reporters.

European leaders decided to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions after Trump informed them of his phone call with Putin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in a post on the X network.

Trump seemed reluctant to follow through. Asked why he had not imposed new sanctions to push Moscow into a peace deal as he had threatened, he said: “Because I think there is a chance to achieve something, and if you take action, you can make the situation even worse. But there may be a time when that will happen.”

Trump underlined that if there is no progress, he will abandon the negotiation process. "This is not my fight," the US president added.
