Kosovo, political deadlock endangers economic projects - The constitution of the Assembly fails for the eighteenth time
The failure to constitute the Kosovo Assembly for the 18th time has blocked the formation of institutions, damaging economic projects in the country. Experts warn of serious consequences for the economy, investments and partnership with the EU.
The constitution of the Kosovo Assembly has failed again. Not even in the 18th consecutive session did the voting process to form the Electoral Commission, which would have enabled a secret ballot for the candidate for speaker of parliament, pass.
With 52 votes in favor, one against, and no abstentions, the process for forming this Commission passed. The session was adjourned, to continue on May 21, at 11:00.
The World Bank has already warned of a slowdown in economic growth in Kosovo this year. The situation is expected to be further aggravated by the political deadlock in the country. This is because many international financial agreements have remained unapproved during the previous legislature. Among them is the financing agreement with the International Development Association.
But how does the failure to form institutions affect the country's economic development? The consequences are serious, warn sources from the Chamber of Commerce. According to them, the failure to form institutions endangers the economy, investments and reforms in the country.
"These consequences will not be eliminated overnight. We are far behind in implementing reforms and in approving many international agreements. We are behind in establishing a government, while business needs to draft fiscal policies, especially on the issue of electricity," they said.
The Alliance of Kosovo Businesses also views the situation with great concern for the effects of the failure to form institutions. Alliance officials emphasize that this will have a significant impact and will have major economic and financial consequences. “The failure to constitute and ratify several agreements related to support for Kosovo, worth over 1 billion euros, is at risk, as a result of the lack of a functional Assembly and government,” they explained.
"In economic terms, the country cannot develop without a genuine partnership with the European Union. The very fact that Kosovo will be sidelined this year from the Western Balkans Growth and Development Program is proof of this. In these circumstances, it is difficult to think about attracting foreign investors. In social terms, we face high inflation and crises that are deepening every day," say economic analysts.
According to them, the impact will also be felt in the political aspect, on the agenda of the Council of Europe and membership in various international institutions.
