Use of liquefied natural gas - Albgaz study identifies 3 areas with high potential for consumption
The state-owned gas company, Albgaz, has conducted a feasibility study on the development and expansion of the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG), focusing on capacity building and justifying infrastructure investments. This study included identifying key areas with high potential for gas consumption and ensuring a justified return on the costs of building natural gas transmission lines.
The study has identified 3 areas for high gas consumption. The first is the Vlora Region, where the main consumers will be the Vlora Thermal Power Plant (TEC), which is a large energy user, as well as TEDA Vlora and a group of industrial and small and medium-sized business clients. This area has been assessed as an investment opportunity for the development of the necessary infrastructure for the distribution of natural gas, with projects already planned to attract investors and develop a robust gas network.
Korça and the partnership with SOCAR is the second area, according to the study. This project aims to increase the use of natural gas and support the economic development of the region, by ensuring a stable and secure gas supply for local industry and consumers in this area.
Meanwhile, the third zone includes Durrës and Tirana, which are considered to be important industrial and economic centers where business and production activities have developed rapidly and require a stable energy supply. The development of infrastructure along the “Durrës-Tirana” highway will help connect these two cities to the gas distribution network, making it easier for local businesses and industry to access natural gas resources and reduce energy costs.
The study also mentions Elbasan, due to its metal processing industry, as one of the key sectors that requires large amounts of energy.
