The UK has been seeking to re-establish closer ties with the European Union since leaving the bloc. The parties are seeking more cooperation in the areas of trade and defence.

The UK is ready to undertake the most significant reset of relations with the European Union since Brexit, seeking closer cooperation on trade and defence to strengthen security on the continent.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer believes that easing trade tensions and delivering tangible benefits for Britons will be more important than accusations of "betrayal" from Brexit activists.

"It's time to move forward, we need to move away from old political squabbles and find practical solutions that improve the lives of the British people," Starmer said on the X network.

At the heart of the talks is a defense and security pact that could allow British military companies to participate in a €150 billion program to rearm Europe.

The two sides have agreed to provide access to fishing waters for 12 years, people familiar with the matter said, in a move expected to draw criticism from politicians and industry. The move aims to lift border controls that have prevented many small food producers from exporting since Britain left the bloc in 2020.

The island also hopes to provide access to faster electronic gates for UK travellers at EU airports. In return, the country is expected to agree to a limited youth mobility scheme and could participate in the Erasmus+ student exchange programme.

The reestablishment of relations comes after US President Donald Trump's upheaval of the post-war global order and Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which have forced governments around the world to review ties on trade, defense and security.
