EU-US talks in Rome - Parties discuss trade, Ukraine and defense

Representatives of the European Union and the United States held talks in Rome, where trade, defense and the war in Ukraine were the main topics. Von der Leyen called the meeting a "new beginning", highlighting cooperation and new EU investments in the military.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hosted trilateral transatlantic talks in Rome, which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted as a potential "new beginning" in international relations between the two blocs.

US Vice President JD Vance called Europe "an important ally", although, according to him, the two sides of the Atlantic "have some disagreements, as friends sometimes do, on issues like trade".

Von der Leyen underlined the important trade partnership between the two sides: "Indeed, we have the largest trading relationship in the world, with more than $1.5 trillion a year."

The EU Commission President added: "Everyone knows that the devil is in the details, but what unites us is that in the end we want, together, to have a good deal for both sides."

She also used the moment to put Ukraine at the negotiating table and thank the US for its commitment towards a possible peace.

"What is important now is of course that we move forward and I think this week will be crucial for that," von der Leyen noted.

Beyond Ukraine, another issue discussed was defense. Von der Leyen acknowledged that EU member states need to increase defense investment, saying the European Commission has taken steps to facilitate this.

"This is why we have enabled the use of up to 800 billion euros in the next four years for defense investments," von der Leyen said.
