Albanian tourism towards new standards - Investment Council recommends formalization of the sector
Following amendments to the Law "On Tourism", the tourism sector in Albania has entered a transformation phase. The changes aim to increase the quality of services and formalize the accommodation market, through a more detailed classification of tourist structures and the introduction of mandatory certificates for individuals offering rooms, villas or apartments for rent.
Now, every entity that provides accommodation services must be provided with a qualification certificate and a classification certificate from the relevant Ministry, although registration with the National Business Center is not mandatory for them.
Part of this reform is also the improvement of the tourism data system. With the new law, data reporting will be carried out by public institutions and private operators, while the Tourism Statistics Committee has been established, a new coordinating structure that will be led by the Minister of Tourism himself. But what are the data from the Investment Council's report on this sector?
The Investment Council's recommendations emphasize the need for standardizing service quality and structuring sector statistics, as a basis for more accurate policies and fair competition in the market.
These measures are expected to benefit over 20,000 accommodation sector businesses, improving their positions in the tourism market. Tourism already plays an important role in the national economy, contributing 17% to economic activity, 8.5% to GDP and employing around 20% of the workforce. The sector represents around 15% of the country's service industry and attracts over 7.5% of total investment.
