"Independent SAI, an obligation for us EU" - Gonzato: Control over budget expenditures and European funds
The independence of the Supreme State Audit Office in conducting audits on how Albanian and European taxpayers' money is spent is a necessity for Albania's integration into the European Union. This was the message given by the EU ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, in the context of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of this institution.
"EU legislation requires that institutions such as the SAI be independent and equipped with the appropriate resources and mandate to exercise control over all income and expenditure of public funds, including those of the European Union and other donors. Any changes to be made must be in full compliance with the requirements of EU legislation and standards."
The European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, praised the role of this institution in strengthening good governance and transparency in the country, the progress made over the years and the ability to implement international auditing standards, while emphasizing that there is still room for further improvement.
“Let me congratulate the SAI for the professional skills to implement international standards of the SAI institutions and the fact that you have asked us to organize a peer review of the audit methods with the support of our friends from OECD Sigma shows that you are committed to learning more and improving your audit work. The situation has improved, but we are of the opinion that there is still a need for improvements.”
The Supreme State Audit Office, through its audits, highlights irregularities in all public institutions in the country regarding the use of public funds.
