EU agrees on distribution of asylum seekers - Relocation planned within member states. Kosovo among safe countries

EU interior ministers agreed to simplify asylum rejections and create a list of safe countries. They also plan to relocate 21,000 asylum seekers within the bloc to ease pressure on the most affected countries.
EU interior ministers agreed to simplify the rejection of asylum applications and to draw up a common list of "safe countries of origin." In addition, "relocations" within the European Union are envisaged.
Member states have reached an agreement on the distribution of asylum seekers and contributions to the so-called solidarity mechanism. Within the EU, 21,000 asylum seekers will be relocated to other countries to ease the pressure on EU member states that are in a particularly difficult situation. Interior ministers agreed on this at a meeting in Brussels.
In addition, the least affected countries will contribute €420 million as part of the solidarity mechanism. Under this measure, uniform procedures will be applied across the bloc in future regarding returns. This includes pre-deportation detention, re-entry bans and, above all, stricter rules on how people must cooperate with the authorities.
In its analysis, the European Commission classifies Greece, Cyprus, Spain and Italy as countries that will be eligible for solidarity from other EU states next year, due to high immigration pressure.
However, so far, few interior ministers are willing to accept more refugees in the future. Many countries, including Germany, could seek exemption from this obligation under the Commission's guidelines. Among the EU countries that, under the new rules, will most likely have to accept migrants from other countries or make solidarity contributions are countries such as Sweden, Portugal, Hungary, Romania and Luxembourg.
In addition, the bloc has for the first time established a common list of safe countries of origin. The list includes Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, India, Kosovo, Bangladesh and Colombia. Asylum seekers from these countries will have their procedures expedited, for example by carrying them out directly at the border or in transit zones.
