Turkey guarantees Hungary's supply of Russian gas - Prime Minister Orban announces agreement with President Erdogan

Turkey and Hungary have agreed that Ankara will guarantee the passage of Russian gas to Budapest. Prime Minister Viktor Orban continues to rely on Russian imports despite criticism from the EU and NATO.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban have agreed that Turkey will guarantee Hungary's supply of Russian gas.
Hungary has maintained its dependence on Russian energy since the start of the war in Ukraine, facing criticism from some European Union and NATO allies.
Budapest signed a 15-year deal with Russia in 2021 to buy 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually and increased its purchases from Gazprom last year, importing about 7.5 billion cubic meters of Russian gas through the TurkStream pipeline.
"Today we reached an agreement with the president that Turkey will act as a guarantor of the supply corridor, so that Russian gas can be transported unhindered to Hungary," Orban declared at a press conference.
The Hungarian prime minister also said that the country has received 7.5 billion cubic meters of gas through the TurkStream pipeline so far this year.
Last month, the United States exempted Hungary for a year from US sanctions despite its use of Russian oil and gas, after Orban sought relief during a friendly meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington.
Orban also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in late November. He said at the time that he was visiting Moscow “to ensure that Hungary’s energy supply is guaranteed for this winter and next year.”
