EU gives "green light" to Italian plan for migrant centers -

Italy says the Council's approval of the main migration package on Monday paves the way for the opening of two asylum centers in Albania, which had been on hold for months due to legal obstacles.

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi stated in Brussels that the centers in Albania are preparing to return to full operation and that they will be used for accelerated border procedures, as the first model of "return centers", provided for in the new regulations.

The centers in Gjadra and Shëngjin were established based on the 2023 Italy-Albania protocol and were intended to house adult men from safe countries, rescued at sea, to quickly process applications and organize returns.

Their departure was postponed after Italian courts overturned several detention orders and called into question the list of safe countries for some nationalities, leading the case to the EU's highest court. Meanwhile, the Council approved a revision of the concept of safe third countries, which makes it easier to reject applications and expel applicants to countries they have transited through.

EU interior ministers also reached agreement on the return regulation, which allows for the establishment of return centres outside EU territory, and finalised the common list of safe countries of origin, speeding up the processing of applications for citizens of Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kosovo, Morocco and Tunisia.
