EU, 3 billion euros for green fuels - Objective, reducing carbon emissions from

The European Commission announced a €2.9 billion plan to boost investment in green fuels by 2027, aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from air and maritime transport. Together, these two forms of transport account for around 26.4% of emissions in the bloc's sector.

With the EU aiming for climate neutrality by 2050 compared to 1990 levels, reducing pollution in air and maritime transport is essential but challenging for the 27 member states. Commercial aircraft and ships are the hardest to decarbonise and currently use mainly fossil fuels, despite the bloc's laws aiming to achieve climate neutrality in this sector.

"This package aims to strengthen Europe's competitiveness, moving towards a net-zero emissions future. By investing in the growth of renewable and low-carbon fuels, we are making the European transport system cleaner, more sustainable and more affordable for citizens," a bloc official said.

The European Commission estimates that around 20 million tonnes of sustainable fuels, including biofuels and e-fuels, will be needed by 2035 to meet the targets for air and maritime transport. Achieving this goal will require investments worth around €100 billion. By 2050, maritime transport is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80%.

The aviation sector is expected to have 20% of sustainable jet fuel, produced from sources such as used cooking oils, agricultural waste and captured carbon, supplied by EU airports starting in 2035. By 2050, green aviation fuels should account for 70% of consumption.
