Trump admits "guilt" - "Americans are paying more because of tariffs"

President Donald Trump acknowledged for the first time that American consumers are paying more for goods because of the tariffs he has imposed. However, he insisted that Americans have benefited as a whole from the government's policies.
Trump, who has used tariffs as a diplomatic and economic tool since taking office, has long argued that foreign countries are the ones paying for the money that flows into U.S. coffers through these measures. But economists point out that tariffs are actually paid for by the consumers of imported goods themselves.
A few days ago, US Supreme Court justices raised doubts about the legality of tariffs imposed by Trump, in a case that could have far-reaching consequences for the way he governs. The president warned that a decision that would strip him of the right to impose tariffs would be “a disaster” and added that his administration would need a “Plan B.”
During a conversation with reporters in the Oval Office, a reporter mentioned that the tariffs are actually taxes paid by Americans. Asked if he agreed with that, Trump replied: “No, I don’t. I think they might pay something. But overall, Americans are benefiting a lot.”
For months, Trump has repeatedly said that other countries are the ones paying the tariffs. He has imposed measures on imports from China, Canada, the European Union and other countries around the world.
Removing the tariffs would deprive Trump of one of the key political and economic tools he says he has used to resolve international conflicts and bring "economic justice" to the United States.
“I think that would be devastating for our country, but we also need to develop a contingency plan,” Trump said when asked about a possible Supreme Court ruling against him. “I hope we win. I can’t imagine that anyone would do that kind of damage to our country,” he said.
